Terms of Service

Last updated August 17, 2026.

What a subscription commits you to, and what it commits us to. Written to be read, in the same plain English as the rest of the site.

Subscriptions are not open yet, so there is nothing to buy and nobody is under a subscription term. This is published now so you can read it before there is. How we handle your email address is in the privacy policy.

Who you are agreeing with

Crossed Quills is a trade name of Bonanza Buys LLC, a Wyoming limited liability company.

These terms cover your use of this website and, when subscriptions open, your subscription. Buying one, or joining the waiting list, means you accept them. Subscriptions are not open yet, so no payment has ever been taken. When they open, card details will go directly to a third-party payment processor that is PCI compliant. Crossed Quills never receives, sees or stores full card numbers.

You have to be an adult

Crossed Quills is written for adults. You must be at least 18 to subscribe, to buy a gift subscription, or to give us an email address. We do not knowingly sell to anyone younger, and we will cancel and refund a subscription if we find out we have.

What a subscription is

The Phoenix Letters is Series 1: 24 letters, 2 a month across 12 months, posted to you as sealed physical mail. Most letters carry an inclusion — a pressed flower, a torn map, a feather.

All twenty-four letters are written before the first one is mailed. The story is finished; you're just receiving it slowly. What you are buying is a finished story delivered slowly, not a subscription to whatever gets written that month.

It is not a digital product. There is nothing to log into, nothing to download, and no online copy of the letters.

What you pay

Three ways to buy the same series:

Monthly — $14.95 / month. 2 letters every month for 12 months. $7.48 per letter, billed month to month.

Full series, prepaid — $155. All 24 letters across 12 months, paid once. $6.46 per letter, which keeps $24.40 against the monthly rate — 13% less.

The Keepsake Edition — $199. Everything in the prepaid year, plus $44 for the box, the seal and the map. $8.29 per letter, paid once.

Prices are in US dollars and postage is included. If a price changes, the change applies to new subscriptions — it never reaches a prepaid term you have already bought, and we will tell you before it touches a monthly one. Every figure here is the same figure shown on plans and pricing.

Billing and the cut-offs

The $14.95 monthly plan is charged once a month and keeps running until you stop it. The prepaid plans are a single payment for the whole series, with nothing recurring and nothing to renew.

Letters mail on the Friday of the second and fourth weeks of each month. Order cut-offs are the 1st and the 15th — order before the 15th and you're in that month's second mailing; order after the 15th and you're in the first mailing of the month after.

Those cut-offs are what your billing follows: an order or a change lands in a mailing only if it is in before that date, and otherwise it lands in the next one.

When letters actually mail

The first letter of The Phoenix Letters mails on Friday, February 12, 2027.

After that, letters mail on the schedule above. Post is post: we control the day an envelope leaves us, not the day it reaches you, and we cannot promise a delivery date on the other end.

If a letter is lost or arrives damaged, tell us and we will send another. That is the remedy for a letter that goes missing.

Everyone starts at Letter 1

Everyone starts at Letter 1. It's a story, not a magazine — whenever you join, you begin at the beginning. Whenever you join, your first envelope is Letter 1 and the rest follow in order. There is no catch-up bundle and no way to skip ahead.

Where we ship

We mail within the United States, and postage is included in the price. International shipping is coming — join the list and we'll tell you the moment it opens.

Cancelling, and refunds

There are no accounts and no passwords here. When subscriptions open, cancelling will be self-serve: you use a link tied to your own subscription rather than signing in, and you never have to ask a person for permission to stop.

Cancel any time. Changes made by the 1st or the 15th apply to that mailing. If you're not happy with the story within 30 days, we'll refund you in full — and you keep any letters that have already arrived. After 30 days, monthly payments already taken aren't refunded, but the letters they cover still come. Prepaid subscriptions are prorated for up to 60 days.

Cancelling stops the subscription; it does not delete your email address. If you want that gone as well, the privacy policy explains how to ask, and we will do it.

Gifts

A gift is one of the prepaid plans (Full series, prepaid or The Keepsake Edition) and never the monthly one. It is paid once, runs for the whole series, does not renew, and needs no cancelling by you or by the person receiving it.

Enter your recipient's address as the shipping address and your own for billing. Nothing is sent to your recipient automatically — the surprise stays yours to give. Their first letter arrives at the next mailing date.

The refund terms above belong to whoever paid, not to the recipient. Full details are on the gift page.

The letters stay ours; your copy is yours

The letters, the artwork, the envelope designs, the printed inclusions and everything on this site are original work, and copyright in them stays with Bonanza Buys LLC.

What arrives in the post is your physical copy, for your own reading. Keep it, hand it to someone in your house, break the seal in any way you like, quote a line in a review.

What you may not do is copy it: no scanning, photographing or retyping the letters, no posting the text of a letter publicly in whole or in part, and no selling copies or reproductions of any of it.

Spoiling the story for other readers is not a legal matter, but we would rather you did not.

What we do not promise

The letters are fiction, sold as a reading experience. We cannot promise you will like the story, and taste is not a defect.

This website is provided as it is. We work to keep it accurate and available, but we do not guarantee it will be uninterrupted or error-free, and we do not offer any warranty beyond the ones the law gives you and will not let us take away.

Limits on what we owe you

If something goes wrong, our total liability to you for any claim connected with your subscription or this site is limited to what you paid us in the twelve months before the claim.

We are not liable for indirect or consequential losses. Nothing here limits liability that the law does not permit us to limit, including for fraud.

When these terms change

A new version goes up on this page and the date at the top changes with it.

A change never applies retrospectively to a term you have already paid for. If a change materially affects a live subscription, we will email you before it takes effect, and cancelling is always open to you.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of Wyoming, and any dispute belongs in the courts of Sheridan County, Wyoming.

There is no arbitration clause in these terms and no class-action waiver. We have not signed away your right to take us to court, or to do it alongside other people.

Before any of that, write to us. Almost everything is a mistake with a letter behind it, and we would rather fix it than argue about it.
