Series One. Twenty-four letters, twice a month, for a year.
The Phoenix Letters
A war neither of them started. Two people writing across it. And one way to send a letter that no army can intercept.
Who is writing
The correspondents
Kiara Solmont commands Solmere's front lines. She is also its princess and its heir, in that order most days — she has given orders that got people killed and written the letters home afterward.
Corvin Darkhaven is Court Mage of Umbravale, advisor to Queen Isara. He was born to none of it. His family gave him up at eight, the year his shadow magic showed itself, and the academy raised him instead.
They have met exactly once — a peace summit, in the Garden of Fallen Stars. It didn't end the war.
The mechanism
How the letters cross
Phoenixes belong to no kingdom. There are perhaps a dozen alive. They are immortal, they answer to no crown, and they cross any border or barrier because they travel through fire itself. A bonded phoenix carries messages between two people holding paired feathers, and nothing in either army can stop one.
Six months before the first letter, Corvin went into the Shadowfen to find the Keeper — the figure who guards them — and proved his intent was peace. The Keeper gave him two feathers. One for himself. One to send to a woman he had no business writing to.
Ravens carry ordinary mail in both kingdoms. Nothing about this is ordinary.
Other hands
Not only their letters
Most of the correspondence is theirs. Not all of it. A friend who knows more than she should, a brother who commands Solmere's western front and would end this the day he understood it, and the Keeper himself all put pen to paper before the year is out. Some of what you learn, neither Kiara nor Corvin ever does.

What we won't tell you
We're not going to summarize the plot, and we're not going to tell you how it ends. That's the whole product. What we'll say: some of these will make you laugh, and there's at least one you'll want to be sitting down for.
